Paul Shearsmith kindly sent me these splendid mid-twentieth century labels from Charrington’s at the Anchor Brewery in Mile End and Mann Crossman & Paulin at the Albion Brewery in Whitechapel. It makes me thirsty just contemplating their bold designs, strong typefaces and vibrant warm colours. Anyone fancy joining me for a pint of Toby Brown Ale or a glass of Mann’s Barley Wine? Cheers!

Barley Wine was quite strong I seem to remember!

My dad bought a pair of Burlington Ware Toby jugs from the Charrington brewery. I still have them. Thank you Paul and the GA for reminding me.

I used to occasionally drink Barley Wine in a pub in Charing Cross Road. Introduced to me by a Scottish friend who was a heavy drinker. Usually, for me one bottle sufficed!

I’ll look out for some now, although I seem to recall it was an acquired taste. Oatmeal Stout sounds interesting.

    Thanks for the article.

There was a great variety of beers brewed in London back in the day. I well remember Manns Brown ale. It came in a pint bottle and wasn’t that strong. In the late 60s when as a fifteen year old my mates and I were venturing into pubs (quite normal then!) this was the drink you started with. I only realised recently on one of my trips to London that the Manns brewery was next to the Blind Beggar pub in Whitechapel.
