brings back a lot of memories-the only thing missing is the pub the Kings Stores which is in Widegate street on the corner of Sandy’s Row- I lived there with my parents in the pub in the late 50s and ealy 60s and it is still open Artillery passage is much better these days !
Thanks for the memory’s
I know all about London being over priced, out of the reach of the average human…but it does look better now. Mind you, if the present mindset had prevailed then, Boris and his thugs and jackboots would have had the bulldozers revving up round the clock.
Thanks firstly for such a wonderful Blog
My family had two businesses in the old spitalifields market – one called W Bruce faced on to Brushfield Street; the other called Bruce & Ewart was in the inside of the market.
I used to work the stands for my father as a teenager – I am now approaching 50. I have just moved back into the area by buying an apartment off Brick Lane.
Next time I am at my mother’s house I will dig out all the slides and pictures of the market and am very happy to share if it would be of interest.

What a treat to see these again – thanks. James, it would be great to see more photos of the market area in times gone by.
Oh. These are precious. So many changes now so I can barely remember the streets before. Thanks so much for these!
Love the photos, but why so much litter and garbage in the streets?
As a child I remember my father taking me to Spitalfields, little did I realise at the time my ancestors were buried in the church. Good to see pictures of past times and still a favourite place of mine. I visit as often as I can.
I have the old cast iron street sign from Fort Street. Its original as we happened by it from Fort Street itself in the early eighties.
Great shots. Looking at all those To Let and For Sale signs makes we wish i could time travel and buy them up for just a few bob. Also, odd to think there were Rubber Stamp busineses back then – pre PCs.
