Albert Gardens
In spite of the bombing, the slum clearances and redevelopments, the East End is still with us. In Stepney, there is an entire quarter of early nineteenth century terraces and squares that have survived the changes of the twentieth century. They are magnificent examples of the human quality of streetscape cherished by East Enders and also plangent reminders of what has been lost.

Arbour Square… Albert Gardens… the old pubs… all of it… lovely and tenacious in the face of adversity.
How magnificent it would have been if more of East London had been of such a standard! Imagine the serried ranks of Hackney or Dalston terraces replaced by green squares like these! Can anyone say what the economics would have been?
Lovely photos! Though photo No. 5 is not near Dunelm Street, it is the corner of Senrab Street with Senrab Street, opposite Marion Richardson Primary School, the southern end of Senrab Street. ( I live in the area)
These are beautiful old properties, there are also properties like this behind Queen Mary University at Mile End. Back in the 80s a friend of mine lived in an upstairs flat overlooking Stepney East railway station, it was part of a big old detached house but the ground floor was pretty much derelict as it had been flooded. After he moved out to Essex the landlord sold the property, it was renovated and sold for about 2m.
