The Old City Of London

April 22, 2023
by the gentle author

The City of London has long been a subject of fascination for me and these powerfully atmospheric glass slides of over a century ago from the London & Middlesex Archaeological Society Collection at the Bishopsgate Institute evoke the drama and mystery of this ancient citadel magnificently.

Starting on Sunday 4th June, join me on the first Sunday of each month through the summer at 2pm on a storytelling ramble across the Square Mile, from the steps of St Paul’s through the narrow alleys and lanes to the foot of old London Bridge, in search of the wonders and the wickedness of the City of London.

I love guessing where these brilliant photos are before I look at the caption.

A great set of images and I thoroughly recommend the GAs tour around the City of London. Some of these places are included in the walk which is punctuated by stories and commentary. The seat of financial power is here but that doesn’t make it a comfortable place to be. Visiting remnants of Roman London stamps your memory with the realisation of the City’s ancient history and prominence. There is even a link with Spitalfields silk woven into the tale. Beginning with the magnificence of St Paul’s Cathedral, you recognise that you are indeed in the beating heart of London. Look up and around, explore and enjoy!
