Another Dant masterpiece full of all sorts of interesting stuff. I am familiar with quite a lot of the esoteric things mentioned but there are plenty of intriguing things which I haven’t heard of before, and need investigating…

For example – the cutting of the Baddely Cake in Drury Lane, Apple Day at Covent Garden, the Bubble Sermon at St Brides (the mind boggles!), and the Swearing on the Highgate Horns – is that a genuinely old pagan tradition or one invented by the Victorians?

And what is the Sig Favales bequest? And two to do with the Tower of London – what is the connection with St Valentine, and what are the lions that are washed there? And why??

All fascinating stuff, and a reminder of the rich and eccentric history of London.

Thank you Adam, and GA for sharing.

And happy new year of course! xx

Thank you ! Signor Favale left a bequest to the city of London to annually provide dowries for brides to be. Yes, and be sure not to miss the ‘washing of the queens lions’ at the Tower of London on the first day of April !

Charles, duke of Orleans is said to have sent the world’s first Valentine’s card to Mrs Orleans from his prison cell in The Tower ( obviously in lieu of standing her up on date night at the West Smithfield Berni Inn )

Cutting of the Baddeley Cake?, Trial of the Pyx?, Sheepdrive over London Bridge?, Swearing on the Horns? Cart Marking Ceremony? ….I want to know more!
A big thank you to the very talented Mr Dant and G.A., and wishing all a very happy and healthy New Year.
