Chris Thompson’s Lonely Streets
Today it is my pleasure to introduce the atmospheric streetscapes of Chris Thompson whose exhibition The Painter’s House opens at Townhouse, Spitalfields, next Saturday 26th March
King’s Cross Afternoon
“My paintings conjure subdued drama, brought to life by the patterns of shadow cast when the light changes as the city becomes an arena of abstract lights and shapes, layered and dense. These are timeless moments that are repeated everywhere, reflections flickering on the side of a bridge, a lamp post in the morning sun, silhouettes of houses sharpened as the afternoon sun floods a street. People appear only incidentally but these places are never empty, because they have their their own stories to tell. “

Gorgeous paintings.
Lovely paintings.
Almost Magritte …
I love these paintings. They have a peaceful, timeless quality (something to do with the play of light no doubt) but also a sense of someone having stepped out of the frame just a moment before. My 20 year old self might have stood on the Camden Road Bridge a moment (more like 40 years) ago in my lunch break.
The replication of light here is amazing. So atmospheric.
The painting of the passage way is very lifelike, I am walking in it.
Wonderful paintings I especially like Godwin’s Court. Thank you.
Beautiful shadows and light on these poignant and quiet urban scenes.
I love these. They put me in mind of Walter Steggles and his work from the 1930s. Peaceful.
Wonderful, atmospheric pictures — some of them with the same sense of place found in the paintings of London Streets and skies done by Algernon Newton almost 100 years ago.
Absolutely fabulous; the colours and shades of London – perfect.
Greetings from Boston,
GA, what wonderful paintings from Chris Thompson’s collection. Such a graceful play of light and shadow. Good luck with the exhibition.
I particularly enjoyed “Goodwin’s Court” that reminded me of “St. Dunstan’s Court” leading into Dr. Johnson’s House in Gough Square, just off Fleet Street.
Lovely images, almost photographic like but more alive. I like Passageway and The Painter’s House, does anyone know their locations please?
Absolutely wonderful paintings. One can really get into the mood of each picture. I hope that I can get to the exhibition.
Shades upon shades. Pink and grey, tan and grey, blues and blue-black. Thousands of hours must have gone in to observing all of this. The oil paint adds to the rich layers.
These remind me of an Edward Hopper exhibition I saw in Basel not long ago, they’re very atmospheric and have a haunting quality to them. Marvellous.
Cherub, I agree that these paintings do channel Edward Hopper. Thank you for pointing that out.
These are lovely evocative paintings with beautifully observed and detailed buildings and streetscapes.
However as I have recently had to paint a large sky backdrop I can also really appreciate his depiction of the various skies and cloud formations which are very atmospheric and subtle.
Great stuff, and I look forward to seeing the exhibition!
These are exquisite.
