At Fairlop Fair

Fairlop Fair is traditionally held in Hainault Forest in Essex on the first Friday in July, as I learnt recently from this booklet published by William Darton of Holborn Hill in 1811. I am grateful to Sian Rees for drawing my attention to this. Fairlop Fair 2021 is being held on 31st July this year.

What a wonderful whimpsy story about the Fairlop fair ! I would have loved to see the boat on wheels 🙂 Too bad the tree is gone…
I would love to visit FAIRLOP FAIR and the mighty oak tree because I like the slogan: “All trouble seems a joke!”

The time has come
To look at fun
Is it Helter skelter or dodgem?
Sitting in a machine
Is just a fright
On a Saturday night
Can it ever compare
With an age old fair?
Galavanting , larking and fooling
Machines may have won
But Fairlop was fun
What a lot of verses! I wonder what ‘baskets of prog’ were? Googled came up with some weird answers, none of which I was looking for.
This doggerel was lots of fun
A lively, cheery history;
The tale of Fairlop Fair was done
‘Cause Day fairly lopped that oak tree.
With apologies to all real poets.
The OBJECT indeed … the Fairlop Oak and its amazing history brought into view.
