More Hounds Of Hackney Downs
Yesterday, the second instalment of Hackney Mosaic Project’s splendid series of portraits of the dogs of Hackney Downs was installed under the presiding genius of Tessa Hunkin. Immediately, proud owners were lining up to identify their pets immortalised upon the wall.
When I asked Tessa how it was possible to find so many different ways of portraying dogs in mosaic, she replied that it was simple – the infinite variety of the dogs provided the inspiration.
The mosaic can be visited any day in the park and look out for a celebration later this month when all the dogs will gather for an unveiling ceremony.
THE HACKNEY MOSAIC PROJECT is seeking commissions, so if you would like a mosaic please get in touch hackneymosaic@gmail.com

Gorgeous work!
Beautiful piece of work!
Absolutely brilliant work by Tessa and her team yet again!
Fantastic use of different shaped mosaics to capture the unique characters of the dogs (Dolly made me laugh out loud!)
Extraordinary !!! Magnificent – each of them is there full of life and expression
Thank you !
How marvellous! Doggy heaven in mosaic.
Wonderful! How incredible to be able to give such an impression of each dog’s character. I can’t help thinking that if Seymour, Todge and Yogi get together at the celebration it could be quite raucous!
I am in awe of this group of mosaic artisans. Every time I read the phrase “is seeking commissions”, I ache with longing. HOW I would love to sit with Ms. Hunkin and discuss a mosaic-ed walkway for our little town hall in the Hudson Valley. Oh, the ideas! I would bore the socks off her, telling her about our nuanced/esoteric history…….how our town was responsible for some of the links of the chain that stretched across the Hudson in the Revolutionary War…..and how every ONE of our hometown boys came home safe following WWI and the celebration that ensued……and so on, and so on. All of THAT would be brilliantly captured in her mosaic masterpiece; as well as our present-day farms and views of the Catskills and Berkshires. All of that!
These mosaic artists have my deep admiration. Thank you for regaling us today, GA.
Beautiful mosaic of our furry friends. I like how many pointy nosed Whippet/Greyhounds are represented. Best dogs ever!!
Oh these are wonderful. Tessa is just brilliant! She has captured the spirit and individuality of each dog together with what must be such lifelike representation, and aren’t the names marvellous too. The colours and spacing of each part of each panel are perfect.
Oh, These are So Beautiful!!!????????
Great public art – which sadly is sometimes…not so great. This is; but I wonder how repairs will be financed & undertaken in years to come
As someone said above, this is wonderful public art. The mosaics are full of life and joy and I love the colours.
