List Of Local Shops Open For Business
Samuel Stores by John Allin, 1975
Each Wednesday, I shall be publishing the list of stalwarts that remain open locally. Readers are especially encouraged to support small independent businesses who offer an invaluable service to the community. This list confirms that it is possible to source all essential supplies locally without recourse to supermarkets.
Be advised many shops are operating revised opening hours at present, so I recommend you call in advance to avoid risking a wasted journey. Please send any additions or amendments for next week’s list to spitalfieldslife@gmail.com

Brick Lane by John Allin
The shop is closed but we can post out any books from stock.
Local shops provide many with a lifeline. Before we closed the doors of our bookshop an elderly customer told me in disbelief that both our pharmacist here in South End Green and our newsagent had offered to hand deliver whatever she needed. She has lived here for thirty years and the kindness of local people means everything- she said just knowing the offer was there is a comfort.
Good idea GA!
And it would be great if one of the good things that comes out of this crisis is that people revert back to using local shops more. Our local village store (run by community volunteers) has been brilliant over the last couple of weeks and always has a cheery message on a blackboard outside to keep our spirits up (although it has had to end with “No Loo Rolls!”)
Nice to see the two Brick Lane beigel shops are open. I have had many debates about which is better!
Cecil Gee in Whitechapel? What a surprise.
I am guessing the bollards in Gun St are real gun barrels.
Holy Shot Coffee! What a great name for a shop! And what lovely paintings. Thank you Gentle Author for keeping us informed and entertained in these strange times. All the best to you and Schrodinger.
Great service. Thanks. And echo your sentiment of trying to support local shops.
You are brilliant , Gentle Author !
Thank you for this…coming in to work in school tomorrow, good to know some shops are open xx
Great idea GA! You truly are a stalwart of your community.
Yes, we should all be trying to support our small independent businesses at the moment wherever in the world we call home.
It worries me greatly that many of our remaining independent booksellers will fail to reopen when we emerge from this pandemic. Hopefully, at present, people will be reading more and will be ordering from them.
Hello GA, I do love your blog and never miss it. But one request for something that I would find valuable and perhaps your other readers might as well. PLEASE name the medium of the paintings, size would also be helpful. These paintings look like watercolor, but could be gouache, oil, or even colored pencil. They could be small, even done at the kitchen table, or rather large. I would like to know more.
Great service to those living in the East End, and always a great enjoyment seeing John Allin’s paintings. I’m sure he would be thrilled they are being used in such a manner. Thanks GA and stay safe!
Regions Choice Chemist Cambridge Heath Road next to Cephas St
Never hear a bad word about the lovely owner who does a lot to help people all the time not just in this crisis.
And also another who are already listed are Pellicis who are always helping those less fortunate without blowing their own trumpets.
I noticed the ad for R, Whites Lemonade outside the shop in Gun Street. We always enjoyed a cold glass of Corona lemonade when I was a boy. What a stroke of luck that brand disappeared.!
