The Gates Of Old London
For a while, I have been seeking a set of prints of the Gates of Old London to show you and, over the festive period, I came upon these handsome Players Cigarette Cards from the Celebrated Gateways series published in 1907. As we contemplate the going-out of the old year and the coming-in of the new, they make the perfect post to complete the pages of 2013 for Spitalfields Life and give me the opportunity to send you my wishes for your happiness in 2014.

What a lot of gate demolishment in the 1700s
Dear Gentle Author,
Thank you for posting those amazing cards!
All love and grace to you and yours in the coming year.
But no picture of the one remaining gate!
This has been moved (at least) twice:
Temple Gate ( Usually called Temple Bar), now re-erected, again, just to the N of St Pauls’
Thank you, GA, and every good wish for a happy and peaceful New Year to you too (and also to Mr. P.)
very interesting and wishing you a very Happy New Year . Look forward to more interest in 2014 !
Thankyou for all your wonderful posts this year. Happy New year to you.
A great set of pictures. I’ve often wondered about the old gates – now I know. Thank you.
With these cards the meaning of the word ‘Gate’ becomes more perspicuous. Very nice old graphic art work!
*** All the best to you ALL in 2014! ***

What a wonderful set! Shame that for obvious reasons we can’t any longer have cigarette cards – what do you think could provide opportunities for a modern equivalent? Happy 2014 to you Gentle Author. I’m already looking forward to what I’m sure will be another year of marvellous postings.
And best wishes for the New Year to you and yours and all your readers
What bliss. At least you could find out fascinating facts while having a tab! How I would have loved to have seen the gates of London. Have to make do with admiring Temple Bar and yet
to visit St John’s museum in the old gate. A jaunt for 2014? Happy New Year, dear Gentle Author and many more merry rambles. Please give Mr Pussy a reverential tickle behind the ears.
Wonderful images and enlighteneing captions. What about the one in Whitehall, the ‘Holbein Gate’?
Thank you for this – fascinating information which I will link to my Bradshaw posts. And all the best for the New Year
Dear GA,
Another fine posting. I do so enjoy reading them every day. I had no idea that there were so many gates around London.
The cards remind me of my schooldays when we used to play with cigarette cards in the playground.
Have a wonderful New Year.

Wonderful pictures – thank you so much, and for all the joy your articles have brought to us throughout the years! Can you tell us why so many of the beautiful old gates were demolished in the 1760’s? Was it a government scheme?
Have a very, very happy New Year, Gentle Author!
Love,
Sonia in the U.S.
Happy New Year GA
Another enjoyable post. Thank you. I’ve only found your site over the Christmas holidays and I’m using every available minute to catch up with your past posts.
I look forward to your work in 2014 and wish you a happy and healthy New Year.
Thank you for this post and for every other one. Although I was born and live in south rather than east London I love all of this city and its too often vanishing history so it’s great to know you are keeping it alive. Happy New Year to you and to all your readers.
What lovely pictures telling a fascinating history. As previous comment said, the negative outcome of the demise of cigarettes is the cards. So much great history in our capital city
Being a Londoner I found that I was dwelling in the past ,having worked in the city for many years around the Threadneedle street area .A well put together piece of history of our capital. More please.
