The Gates Of Old London

For a while, I have been seeking a set of prints of the Gates of Old London to show you and, over the festive period, I came upon these handsome Players Cigarette Cards from the Celebrated Gateways series published in 1907. As we contemplate the going-out of the old year and the coming-in of the new, they make the perfect post to complete the pages of 2013 for Spitalfields Life and give me the opportunity to send you my wishes for your happiness in 2014.

What a lot of gate demolishment in the 1700s

But no picture of the one remaining gate!
This has been moved (at least) twice:
Temple Gate ( Usually called Temple Bar), now re-erected, again, just to the N of St Pauls’

With these cards the meaning of the word ‘Gate’ becomes more perspicuous. Very nice old graphic art work!

What a wonderful set! Shame that for obvious reasons we can’t any longer have cigarette cards – what do you think could provide opportunities for a modern equivalent? Happy 2014 to you Gentle Author. I’m already looking forward to what I’m sure will be another year of marvellous postings.

What bliss. At least you could find out fascinating facts while having a tab! How I would have loved to have seen the gates of London. Have to make do with admiring Temple Bar and yet

The cards remind me of my schooldays when we used to play with cigarette cards in the playground.

Wonderful pictures – thank you so much, and for all the joy your articles have brought to us throughout the years! Can you tell us why so many of the beautiful old gates were demolished in the 1760’s? Was it a government scheme?

What lovely pictures telling a fascinating history. As previous comment said, the negative outcome of the demise of cigarettes is the cards. So much great history in our capital city
