Over the last quarter century, Photographer Paul Anthony Gardner (not the famous paper bag seller of the same name) has been recording the diverse architectural heritage of the East End. In the intervening years, some buildings have been cherished while others have been neglected and too many have been destroyed, but thanks to Paul we have these atmospheric photographs as evidence.

If those walls could speak and tell their story of what went on there .
    Eg Wilton’s music hall .
I believe it was the first place where the “ Champagne Charlie “ song was sung .

I love the compositions of these photos; there’s something balanced and pleasing about them, but they’re evocative at the same time: a view into other periods, and spaces which are almost liminal. If I had to choose only one to hang on my wall, I’d have a hard time deciding.

Absolutely beautiful images. All so perfectly composed and exposed.
