    Your father was absolutely right about the pin. I’m from Huddersfield and I have no exotic ancestors but when I was young these fruits were a wonderful autumnal treat. In the early 1950s, after school, my brother and I would sit round the fire with my mother and pick each seed out. The colour, the taste and the intricate jigsaw of each piece fitting together has stayed with me.
    I prefer your way. But there was magic in mine …
