Congratulations on the article regarding Aldgate Pump. I attended Sir John Cass Foundation School in Duke’s Place for ten years or so from the mid-1950s to mid-1960s. The rear-corner of the school can be seen in the photo looking towards our school-church of St Botolphs, where I sang in the school choir for a few years. Moving slightly towards the camera, of course, is the entrance to Mitre Square, which was the scene of one of Jack the Rippers murders. In addition, the site of one of the playgrounds was supposed to have been a plague-pit back in the 17th century. I imagine that this probably interested us as children more than the pump. I had heard stories of its victims but never bothered to find out the real history of it before. A very interesting tale. We all leave a little bit of us in the history of such places I guess and vice-versa.
