Saturday ritual, Bethnal Green

At the tiny church of St Peter’s Bethnal Green in a corner of the even tinier churchyard, they are growing Dahlias. As the priest explained to me, they found they had a suntrap, so they piled up the leaf mould from the surrounding trees into raised beds and hey presto – spectacular dahlias. I passed by on Saturday afternoon as the flower ladies were proudly harvesting the blooms in preparation for display on Sunday.

On a farm here in Devon the farmer’s wife does this. Wherever she wants to plant something, say against a beautiful cob wall or to hide something horrid, she just dumps a load of ‘muck’ or earth or compost or good old FYM (farm yard manure to you city dwellers), holds it back with some large bricks or stones, plants it up and hey presto. Magic. It truly works and saves loads of digging and puts plants where you never expected them to grow! Just make sure there’s ample drainage, so best done on earth or loose chippings or cobbles. Go on, try it if you’ve got the spot, and the will.
