The Secret Gardens Of Spitalfields
Click here to book for my next City of London walk on 4th June
Gardens in Spitalfields are open for visitors this year on Saturday 10th June from 10am – 4pm. Find details at the website of the National Gardens Scheme. If you are clever you can even fit in my tour of Spitalfields on the same day.
These hidden enclaves of green are entirely concealed from the street by the houses in front and the tall walls that enclose them. If you did not know of the existence of these gardens, you might think Spitalfields was an entirely urban place with barely a leaf in sight, but in fact every terrace conceals a string of verdant little gardens and yards filled with plants and trees that defy the dusty streets beyond.

What beautiful secret gardens these are! I’ve never had a lot of luck with Hostas because the slugs and snails find them delicious. A fine selection of cats displaying great pride in their respective territories too.
What lovely little oasis of tranquility. Have a successful daym
Beautiful gardens, beautiful cats…
Wonderful hidden gardens inhabited by beautiful cats.
Thank you GA for providing an oasis of peace and colour on this partially sunny , then grey Sunday morning .
In stark contrast I recall childhood visits in the 1950’s to my grandmother little house just behind the London Hospital in Whitechapel. The back yard was perhaps 12 ft square and entirely concreted over , with an outside toilet . My uncle would warn me of the friendly rat that would occasionally pop his head out of the toilet bowl as a greeting . Indeed a trip outside to this foreboding exterior was considered with some trepidation .
Spitalfields Gardens are joy to be hold. More likened to The Secret Garden.
I make a point of visiting these gardens every year, cheers me no end.
How wonderful is this rainbow of greens; so tranquil on the eye.
