List of Local Shops Open For Business
Corner Shop, Canning Town, 1994 by Doreen Fletcher
Every Wednesday, I shall be publishing the up to date list of stalwarts that remain open in Spitalfields. Readers are especially encouraged to support small independent businesses who offer an invaluable service to the community. This list confirms that it is possible to source all essential supplies locally without recourse to supermarkets.
Be advised many shops are operating revised opening hours at present, so I recommend you call in advance to avoid risking a wasted journey. Please send any additions or amendments for next week’s list to spitalfieldslife@gmail.com

Hi there,
Just to let you lnow that Spitalfields farm is still producing fresh provisions for sale. These can be ordered via the website and collected at the farm.
Fresh cut greens, farm laid eggs, some plants etc

On top of common-sense usefulness, what our G-A has done is, to me, kinda touching, warm and friendly, supportive and supporting of his (clearly-loved) community.
What’s heartbreaking to me, is that these are all, all 60! of these are the small businesses that make life in some neighborhoods a joy.
And all are run by sturdy, mostly friendly folk, much behind the scenes, ones who rarely cut a f&$%ing break.
Bless them all. And the G-A too.
I love the paintings.
Just to let you know how much I enjoy getting your emails, coming from an East End family many years ago, I’m now retired and settled in Australia, I got to know about you whilst in London last year through a friend.
I wish all of you a healthy and successful future!
Stay safe
David
Top work guys.
Lovely series of pictures to accompany the good work too
GA, you’re provided a dual service. Not only listing the intrepid businesses, but also shining a light on Ms. Fletcher’s paintings. To me, they depict the familiarity and fondness for Home that we
are all giving such deep thought to right now. Home is our refuge.
Finding gratitude and optimism whenever and wherever we can,
Onward and upward.
Top marks GA for compiling such a detailed list to help your community.
Deliveries of food have been very, very difficult in rural areas.
Your innovation inspired me to collate the handful of my local suppliers and pass them on to our Community Hub who are emailing all who must not go out, together with contact details of brave volunteer shoppers.
Not nearly as good as yours, but my discoveries span the spectrum of all dietary needs :
Deli, Fish, Butcher, Farm Shop eggs, plants & vegetables.
Sadly for me, no hardware but l’m having fun adapting the use of anything to hand. My wardrobe door is a now potting shed table and l’m growing seedlings in half an egg shell full of compost resting in their boxes
Doreen Fletcher’s art provides real nostalgia from when l actually called on those convivial corner shops, supplying the everyday provisions within.
It was rarer back then to see a female travelling sales person, especially in the huge East End wholesalers.
Could l ever have imagined in the 80s, that l myself would experience rationing and shortages, mainly due to other’s greed, on top of the pandemonium.
l covered a very special territory :
the West End, East End, the City and the Isle of Dogs.
Full of history, full of hilarious characters (some dodgy ones ?) and full of traffic.
The fellow Londoners l encountered every day and their storytelling & wisecracks made those happy decades special and memorable for always.
. Knowing that a proper food delivery is coming on Sunday at last, l can relax and read or garden.
l pray for everyone everywhere
