Phil Maxwell’s East End Dreams
Cheshire St Cafe
Phil Maxwell no longer lives in the East End, which has been the primary subject of his work as a photographer in recent decades. Between 1982 and 2015, when he left, Phil took more photographs of Brick Lane than anyone else and now he returns regularly from his new home in Liverpool to keep up with the old neighbourhood. Yet Phil stills dreams of the East End, as his new haunted images reveal, revisiting his classic black and white photographs from the eighties with emotive painterly colour.

Great images! And the colours and drawn textures really add something extra special.
Why did he move to Liverpool?
Should have kept the straight photos …mixed media dilutes and messes.
Not so gentle.
Is that Pete Doherty in the background in the second On Brick Lane..? They did live on Teesdale St!
Phil Maxwell is clearly the master of Photography. Now — he’s conquering Mixed Media.
I love the juxtapositions and placements in this series — and the color absolutely pops. A
really effective expansion upon his already-great work. Well-done.
Please tell us more about the technique. This looks like a printing technique based on photograph, but I don’t know that much about printing. Would love to read more.
