Beigels Already

Debbie Shuter’s short film ‘Beigels Already’ was shot at Brick Lane Beigel Bakery in 1992. Watch out for appearances by some familiar local characters, including Mr Sammy looking youthful and sassy.

I used to LOVE going to the Beigel Bake after a night out clubbing in the late 80s, early 90s (and yes, I was one of those people who lived ‘out west’ but would travel just to have one). My children love bagels now – and I’m always telling them that the ones we buy in the supermarket have nothing on the ones from the Beigel Bake….going to show them the video – and take them. Brilliant! Thank you – I really love your blog xxx
A good film shot by Debbie for Red Hat. Mr Sammy the beigel king and of course his staff, are hard at it. One part of the process seems automated for this high production flow-rate. Sammy’s secret must be is a good overnight baking with his special recipe. Get them ready- early morning for your customers, then they are the food of the gods so soft and tasteful. The customers in shot appear to be flocking in, I expect they, also are his friends that’s nice, he must have a superior product. Most must live in the area although word gets around for this heavenly beigel. I have bought some the following day at Supermarkets, when over 24hrs they are hard on the bite and can be bland !no more thank you. John

Never mind the West End, I come from Canada to eat at Beigel Bake. OK, I don’t just come for that, but it’s become a custom that when I do go out of a night we all end up there and I buy the beigels for everyone in the car. Nothing has really change there, even some of the faces I still see today. Like most people I’ve been going there since the early 90’s.
Molly Parkin was on TV last week, Weirdest Council Houses. I would love to be her friend. She’s got such a great outlook on life, and she’s not exactly had it easy over the years.

I’m a Brooklynite who lived in Bethnal Green in the 80s and went here most weekends, either on Sun mornings or on my way home Sat nights. You can’t compare these to NY bagels, they are just completely different: smaller, sweeter, so goooood. I’m a cream cheese, salmon and cucumber girl. Great food and great atmosphere. Thanks for posting this, such great memories.

I remember watching this great little film as a student. I’d just moved back to London. I later went on to shoot a black & white photo essay on Brick Lane in 1996. I spent an entire Saturday night in the Beigel Bake photographing and then staggered out the following morning to photograph the now-disappeared Market. I’m SO glad that the Beigel Bake is still there! Long may it reign!
Great video! As a new arrival to London (well, apart from a six-month stint in Peckham as a newborn baby), I’m a recent convert to Beigel Bake. Fascinating to see how it was 20 years ago.

I was in this film and used to love coming here .
I think the beigels were much better back then and certainly a lot cheaper !
