My wife’s great grandfather, George Frederick Taigel, ran a bakery next door to the East London Aquarium. In his journal he records the fire that took place and how he and his wife heard the groaning of the animals caught in the flames. George wrote, ‘the fire raged most fiercely for some time, until the back premises were completely burnt down, many animals perished, & some had to shot for fear they might escape and do damage among the people’. He believed the fire was not an accident.
