Great article about Old Street and City Road. I never realised how much time I spent in this area. I used to travel to school from the Angel Tube to Clapham Common Southside. The tube line from the Angel to Old Street has a ghost station halfway along and it I was always fascinated to see the dark empty platform flash by. This was in the late fifties and I lived in a pub in Clerkenwell at the time having moved from a pub in Battersea. I once boxed at Shoreditch Town Hall in a schoolboy international between London and Dublin. The but was televised on Grandstand!
In 1964 I had a serious car accident at the junction of Central Street and Lever Street. I had only had the car 18 hours and it was a write off. I had bought it with my first bank loan and the insurance never paid out. So I was saddled with the loan and no car. The other driver had come from Whitecross Market.
1971 I was now a printer and worked in Ironmonger Row and was travelling up to London from Essex. We used to go to Whitecross Street for the best chips in London. I would walk to Liverpool Street from Ironmonger row. I remember walking past Bunhill Burial Ground and picking figs off a tree there. Being in the printing trade I worked in Scrutton Street and thenPhipp Street and Holywell Row.
Great times, thanks for bringing back the memories,
Peter
