My mother and 2 sisters were sent there in 1957 from Brentwood Essex by the police as they were suddenly homeless. They arrived late at night, very dark and knocked on the huge oak door, a little window opened in the door with a grill in it and a nun’s face showed through and asked what they wanted. I could go on but it would be a book ! They were very scared . Mum couldn’t work as the children weren’t in school so she bought a platform ticket, on the underground circle line to keep warm and just went round and round all day! They hated it in the hostel but now appreciate what was done for them.
