I am wondering how old the kids in the school photo are. My mother went to that school and I am wondering if she is in the photo. She was born in 1920. I now live in Canada but subscribe to Spitalsfield Life.
My mother also went to the said school she was born in 1923 and I still have her royal jubilee prize she got in 1935
I attended this school in the 1960s. I would so love to trace the whereabouts of a teacher – Jean Ritchie -I owe her a word of thanks as she helped transform my life. Would anyone know of her?
I attended this school in the 60’s loved mr Martin and the head mr sockoloff xx
My mum, born 1913, attended the Robert Montefiore School, starting at age three. She used to say that she ‘was ‘thrilled to see toys when the teacher opened the cupboard door’. She lived in Stepney Green (the poor Jewish East End) and had little in the way of toys at home, so the school was obviously a wonderful place to be in those days.
I was also at the school in the 60’s and remember the same teachers and all the laughs everyone had, a great school in it’s day
How interesting, I have just discovered my grandfather was the headmaster of the school until 1933
I went to Robert Montefiore primary from 1965 to 1969. My mum was also a classroom assistant there. When I first started on the infants the headmistress was Mrs Gosler who happened to be my mums teacher many years before at Scrutton Street school. Steve Harris I was taught my Miss Jean Ritchie who was great. I know she married and was then Mrs Jeffries. Mr Sokolof my the headmaster.
@Jacky Blanks. Thanks for the information related to Jean Ritchie. I remember her so well. She is probably retired now. If you have any other information on her e.g. what other school(s) she went to or notable achievements then this would help me locate her; or should you have friends who have information I would love to know of it.
I also remember Mr Sokoloff – he gave me a severe dressing down once for misbehaving !!
I have just noticed the banner picture for spitafields life. It shows a crowd of people milling about – I think in Brick Lane market (can’t be quite sure). But the woman to the extreme right (with the bouffant blond hair) is, I believe, my Aunt Joyce (otherwise the spitting image of her). Sadly she passed away in 1993 but we always got on well. So good to see her picture – revives memories of her and the market days, not to mention the daft things I got upto!
I’ve also just noticed the name of one of the commentators – Richard Greenslade. Richard, did I know you? I lived in Great Eastern Buildings and your name rings a bell.
I was taught by Miss Ritchie too. She was wonderful
Martine, do you know any more of what happened to Jean Ritchie?
I was studying there in 1972, but now retired in Hk. Would love to get in touch with my old classmates
@Ming Cheung. I am currently based near Shanghai. I frequently travel to HK. Though we were not classmate would be good to speak with someone who was of the same era at Robert Monte. Problem is this site doesnt allow us to leave email addresses so not sure how we can communicate.
My father was Harold (Harry) Martin, who was acting head after Mr Sockoloff retired. I also went to Robert Mont. I remember Jean (Jenny) Richie as well.
Hi, I am currently a teacher at Thomas Buxton school, Buxton Street E1 and am researching the history of our school. As I understand it, The Robert Montefiore School left Deal Street in March 1973 and moved into new premises round the corner in Buxton Street,
At some point, in the late 1970s, the school’s was split into separate infant and junior schools and renamed Thomas Buxton. The school remains in Buxton Street. Can anyone tell me more about this part of the school’s history?
Hi Sasha, I have a lot to tell. Please call me on 07542 257342 for information.
Alan
Trying to contact Jay Wagner. He would now be 59/60 years old. If anyone knows him or knows how I can contact him, please let me know. We were at both Robert Montefiore Schools together and in the same class and were very good friends. Lost contact with Jay after my parents moved to North London.
Thanks
Alan
Hi All.
I was a pupil at Robert Montefiore Sec School from 1969-1975 (lower 6th).
Age is not a helper in remembering names ,but would dearly love to hear from anyone who remembers me (or my last sister-Christine).Thanks to all..(n249sp@yahoo.co.uk)
My dad mentioned this school a few times. I’m assuming he attended during 1970s. Il have to ask him for more info. He also said this school is now known as Thomas Buxton.
Hi Alan I remember the name Jay Wagner. Didn’t he go to Brady Club?
Hi Miriam, We both went to Brady Club and we both went on the 20 mile walk to Skeet House.
Alan – I have only just noticed your response to my request from the summer. Is it still ok to ring? My email is selliott@ thomasbuxton.towerhamlets.sch.uk. Let me know.
Many thanks,
Sasha

Hi All
Over a glass of red wine tonight with Steve Kay reminiscing about Robert Mon, tapped into this site. We both remember lots about the Deal Street school. We both left in ’66 me to Daneford and Steve to RM in Valence Rd. names: Tony Purse, Frank Greenslade, Dave Josephs Lata Patel, John Alexander, Roger Diss, Gary Tabner, Carol Goody, Steven Beager, Alan Tucker, Debbie Forbes, Michelle Carver, Hazel Green, Tony Viles, Janice Brewer, Eddie French and Lorraine Kay.
Teachers: Mr Paddon – Head, Mr Baker. Mrs Braham, Mrs Tanner, Mrs Powell, Mrs Ritchie, Mr Martin, Mr Grodzinski. Good times, good school.
Hi All
Does anyone have any news on Carol Briggs? She attended Robert Montefiore Primary and went on to Robert Montefiore Secondary in Vallance Road from 1966 to 1971. Thanks
My Gran attended the school in around 1930/1939 she has a photo of the school and still remembers all their names. She is 92 now and used to live in Buxton ..her name then was Shirley Pearlman. Is there anyone around who knows anything from those times?
debbie
Hi Deborah, does your Gran remember Beatrice Solomons? This was my mother who lived in Buxton Street in the early 30s/40s. Alan

Hey Jude, we’re you in the same class as Jay at the primary or secondary School? I was in Jay’s class at both Schools.
To Lesley Keeper: it is possible she had a younger sister although I did think it was a brother. Carol lived in a block of flats on Commercial Road.
Thanks
Message for steven Harris, I saw your question asking if Richard Greenslade lived in Great Eastern buildings, I remember a Marion Greenslade from there who now lives in Poplar East London. I assume she must have been related to Richard. I lived in Grey Eagle Street and went to Robert Montefiore Primary until we moved to Hackney in 1965. I was ten years old. Mr Padden was the head teacher then
Is there is possible to get information about school records during 1973-1977..
@Angela brown. Thanks for leaving the comment Angela. I would love to speak with you about those days if possible. Almost certainly Marion would be sister to Richard and I remember Grey Eagle street – the pub and Leon’s very well. Don’t remember Mr Padden, but certainly Mr Sokoloff – a scary individual!
If the Gentle author would be kind enough to allow my email: hrs177@aol.com. Please do get in touch.
Hi All
I attended Robert Monte from 1972 until 1978 when I moved over to Robert Montefiore Secondary. Those were the best and I have the fondest memories of those days especially the summer of 76! I remember the following junior class teachers Mr Smith, Miss Furness, Mr Murray, Miss Buckley and Mr Jones (headteacher). I remember the infant teachers Miss Green, Mrs Tavvy, Miss Banks, Miss Hanky and deputy head Mrs Bloor. Loved the school and cried so much when I had to leave to start secondary. The teachers were some of the best and I don’t think I will ever forget them. Hope someone out there was in my year/class and remembers me.
Hello all
I went to Robert Montefiore infant/junior school between 1965 and 1970 – my name then was Jackie Goodey. I remember Mrs Gosler, Mr Sokoloff and Miss Ritchie. I also remember Miss Mary? She had short black hair and wore beautiful sari? That’s what we called her but looking back now I am pretty sure that couldn’t have been her proper name.
Others in my class were Sui Wong, Stephen Ballam, Susan Conlan, Maureen Worrell, Patience Black. I lived on Cranberry Street, right at the end by the shunting yard gates, backing onto the underground.
My family moved to Aveley in Essex during final year of juniors and I travelled up to RM for six months so I could finish the year and take my 11+
I am trying to find out about my dad’s teaching career – Harry Reuben.
He taught science.
Any information woudl be gratefully received – we do not where else he taught, ad soule love any iformation.
Hopefully
Sally
Does anyone have memories of coming up Gorsefield the old house and gardens in Stansted Essex. I presently run the centre on behalf of Tower Hamlets. A photo or 2 would be fantastic.
Does anyone have any memories of being evacuated to Stretham in Cambridgeshire in 1940
Nita
My late father LEW Goddard (Goldberg) born 1920 lived in Princelet Street. went to Deal Street school. I believe he is in this photo and is the little boy at the end of the front row on the right. I have another photo from 1931 with him holding the board with the name of the school. If anyone had any memories of him I’d love to hear.
Hi my name is anthonias comwillis i attended Robert Montefiore from 1971-1976. I was very involved in the music & drama department.

Hi All
A name in a newspaper today (Sokolof) inspired me to look up Robert Montefiore, and I came across this site. I lived in Greatorex Street and attended RM in Deal St (1964-69), as did my four younger brothers. I have fond memories of my time at RM, and remember a few class-mates including Steven Harris (who helped me learn to swim in Goulston St Baths, yes I remember you!) and his brother Kevin (in class with my brother Kenneth), Gary Beager, Gary Allan, Jackie Martin (I also remember your mum as a lovely lady), Michelle Mowlem, Sharon Leach (lived on the same landing as us in Greatorex Hse), Rosemary Navser, Cynthia Bretao, Anthony Proc, Jay Wagner, Michael Flood and David Schroeder. I also remember David Baker and Michael Conlan as we all left RM and attended Central Foundation Boys School from ‘69.
Mrs Shaw was the teacher who made the major difference to my life (my parents still mention her in conversation), and I remember Mr Martin, Mrs Bloor, Mr Sokolof, as well as Miss Ritchie and Mr Hickman. I am sure somewhere I still have a couple of photos from the annual trip to Seaford. I also spent time at the Brady Club during those years, and joined trips and camping holidays arranged by Derek Cox.
Nice to see others also have fond memories of RM.
Regards, Claud (Claudius) Magras

Best days My school life attending RM
Alan Martin, i remember your dad, he was my teacher at Robert Montefiore. Everyone i went to school with remembers him with great affection, a really wonderful man.
I was a Brady member and then manager and also did the Skeet walk. I was also the cook at Skeet for a while.
Hi Steve,
I’m pleased you have good memories of my father. I recognise your name but can’t place you.
As went to Brady, do you by any chance remember my mother, Beatrice (Betty Martin) nee Solomons? My mother was manager at Brady for many years. She was also a teacher at Harry Goslin, Redmans Road and Stepney Jewish Schools.
I went to RM, started in the nursery, then on to the primary. I left in 1968 and went to Central Foundation Grammar school for girls. My maiden name was Zihni. My favourite teacher was Mrs Shaw, who played the clarinet if I remember, or was it something else? I also recall Miss Ritchie, she scared me for some reason, so much that I sat and wet myself in her class!! And when I was a lot younger there was a lovely lady called Miss Miller, who unfortunately got pregnant and had to leave. I remember playing on the roof playground, buying biscuits with my biscuit money, and the lovely school dinners. The library with windows up to the ceiling where I used to lose myself in their books. The prize givings, and the music lessons, where I learnt to play the glockenspiel. Many fond memories of Mr Sokaloff, who I met again many years later when I was in my twenties, and he lived in the Downham area then. He was lovely. We lived in Greatorex Street, and I remember going camping to Minehead once. I cried for weeks when we came home, my home life was not happy and I loved being at school.
Hi Lesley, do you know if Fred and Daisy had a son called Victor? I went to school with a Victor Cruchington.
Dear all
My parents Roger Patrick and Sandra Patrick (nee Sankey) met 1966?? and married (1969) while working at Robert Mont. They were both geography teachers. They have amazing memories of that place and I (as a teacher now) love hearing about the “good days of teaching”
Anyway in a month it’s their Golden wedding anniverary and if any one at al remembers them and would be willing to send me an email (rcsmithpatrick@outlook.com) with some words or even better a video comment with your memories I would be so grateful. Thanks in advance Becky
Hi Becky, as a matter of interest, did your parents teach at the primary school or secondary?
If they were at the former, they may have known my father, Harold Martin. If they were at the secondary, I may have known them, although I don’t recognise their names, or they may have known me. It would be interesting to know.
Thanks
I went to Robert Montefiore from 1965 to 1970. Names are now a blur but I was in the classes of Miss Ritchie and Miss Mary. I have fond memories of the school and certainly remember Mr Martin and Mr Sokoloff. Had a fun time at Seaford. I lived in Vallance Road near the senior school but went to JFS at 11.
Hi Russell, your name sounds familiar to me. I also went to the Junior school around those dates. Do you remember Jay Wagner, he also lived in Vallance Road?
Honestly I do not remember Jay. Did he live in Hughes Mansions. It has been a long time and in those days we never kept records. It would be lovely to have a class list form somewhere. I recall Shui Wing Wong and Steven Harris and Bradley Vancliff. Unfortunately I lost contact with everybody. Jeffrey Ross was with me at JFS. I cannot recall any of the girls names maybe there was a Tania Ramsden but I could be wrong.
Hi Russell, Jay lived in Valance Road a a few hundred yards up from the secondary school. The only name I remember of those you mentioned is Jeffrey Ross. Never mind, I’m sure someone will recall those names.

I went to Robert Montefiore school from 1950 until 1954 , born in 1939, I travelled each day from Debden, Essex, I was told it was a Central school and that was why I had to get a tube from Debden Station to Mile End then change to Whitechapel Station.
All my friends were from the local area I can remember some names of classmates and some teachers,
Mr Nurse was headmaster, Mr Lloyd taught French, on one report he put Barbara is a very nice girl but her and French do not agree. The geography teacher used to aim the chalk wipers
Skimming across the class at boys behaving badly, it was prudent to duck in his lessons.
Does anybody remember me, if so will add more memories.

Hello, my name is Marilyn and I attended RM primary school 1955 to 1957. We moved away from the area around 1957. I remember Miss Perry, Mrs Gosler, and Mrs Bloor. Mrs Gosler was my nursery class teacher and one day my mother forgot to pick me up from school! She was working away at her sewing machine and suddenly remembered! I recall walking with Mrs Gosler at the age of 4 up the road to see my mum running along and apologising! I liked RM school very much and was happy there. It would be good to reminisce with anyone who attended around that time.

Hello I attended RM primary in the mid sixties and found this site by accident. Reading the comments out of curiosity there were so many names I remember and or course several of the
teachers. I have had a wonderful conversation with Alan Martin and to tell him what an inspirational teacher his dad was. Steve Harris if you pick this message up I have happy memories of you with my brother Alec (Siu Wing) Wong who is now living in HK.
@Jackie Williams (Goodey)
I do remember you well and did wonder whatever happened after you moved to Aveley.
Really pleased you remember me.
Recall you and Tonia Ramsden were the two brightest in the class. Just to add my little
memory of our classmates. Ian Walker, Peter Patel, Russell Shapiro, Paul Micalef, Steve Harris (my chess partner) Alison (can’t remember the surname) Jeff Ross, Jean Richardson.
Link was passed on recently and only just managed to have a read, so apologies if somewhat late in
adding my bit. Have fond memories of the last year and Seaford
Hi, does anyone remember a teacher called Miss Muriel Gill, now Muriel Gutsell?
I had a call from her as she taught at RM in the 1950s/60s. I have contact details for her if anyone would like her number.
Thanks
Alan
Hi again,
As Suk Yee Wong said, we had a wonderful long conversation reminiscing. It is amazing how this site is connecting so many people and bringing back many memories after such a long period of time. I’m sure there are many other old friends that are unaware of this site. It may be worth mentioning this site on other social media sites to make people aware.
It would be great to get in contact with our childhood friends again.
??
Alan
I wonder if there are class lists anywhere. It would also be nice to know what happened to our teachers. I thought about visiting the building last year on the 50th anniversary but I didn’t quite make it. I rarely get the chance to visit the east end these days and anyway it has no
Doubt changed dramatically

Hello Alan Martin, I have a group photograph of the school journey in Seaford in 1966, which includes your dad and some of the then children named on this webpage. If you would like me to send you the photograph, please let me know. I have noted your e-mail address as given on 30 March 2017. I left RM, Deal Street in 1967.
Is the school still there ?
My mother went to the school
Lily Bryman and left in December 1928
She was head girl and also received the
Montefiore Award voted by her school comrades
I have the letter given to her and signed by
M.C. King.
Would love to get more information.
She lived in Underwood Street.
Rebecca Smith I can’t believe your dad is Roger Patrick , I remember him so so well. He was tall and a good footballer. He was one of the people that inspired me to become a professional footballer. Unbelievable. I hope he is still alive and healthy, I will never forget him
@ Nazma Islam,
So sorry for the very delayed response. Only just see it today.
You mentioned a few teachers that I actually forgot.
I liked Mr Carter alot. A fine teacher and had some great taste in music.
Will never forget Mr Mitra. Do you remember Mr Wallett who teaches Geography?
Unbelievably happy days.
I was at RM around 1953-56. The only memories I have is of walking across the bomb site from my home in Brick Lane (now the Indian “Aladin Restaurant”) to Deal Street and of the fence around the roof where we used to play. I have many photos in myself in school uniform during the weekends but only one taken in the school itself of myself as a soldier with 5 other classmates in the cast of “Rumpelstiltskin”. Now in Oz.
Hi all,
It’s really great to know that memories are kept alive of RM school. It was the best years of my life and great teachers. I was there from 1976 to 1980. The headmaster was an Indian by the name of Mr Mitra and he was strict! In my final years there I was in art class across the playground ( now demolished) I had a lot of friends and Bangladeshi friends. Even to this day I want to go back and walk the corridors of that school. We used to swimming lessons just off petticoat market and Buckfast street for the art classes in the beginning….oh I wish I could rewind the clock back.
@ Mohammed Akram
Who can forget Mr Mitra? He was quite strict but I got on pretty ok with him.
The demolished building where they had art, drama and music lessons was the Underwood building. A real shame it isn’t there anymore.
I remember the swimming lessons at Goulston St when I first started at the school in 1974.
Great days and memories.
I taught P.E. at Robert Montefiore in the 70’s. Mr. Mitra was the headteacher. He followed Mrs Macdonald Murdoch. Rita Dash was the girl’s P.E. teacher. I took groups to Gorsefield. We introduced hockey, volleyball as well as playing all the usual sports. I started there as the new sports hall opened. Simply wonderful days. Hard but incredibly rewarding work. The morning swimming lessons at Goulston Street were great fun.
Teachers who remain in mind were Messrs. Lawrence, McNulty, Philpott, Kitchener, Mrs. Rodgers. Mrs Garfinkle and Carole McQueen from the office. BrianVickery caretaker.
HAPPY MEMORIES.
IAN McGINN

I think I remember you. Did you have blonde hair? I left the school in 1980 after being a 6th former.
Does anyone here remember Mr Carter who taught music?
@ Ian McGinn,
Is it right to say that you played hockey at national level?
I only attended RM school from September 1972 until March 1974 while Mrs MacDonald Murdoch was the head teacher and Mr Mitra was the Deputy Head teacher. She had great ambitions for the school.
I remember Miss Dash for P.E. gymnastics and trampolining. Mr Hunt was the music teacher, I joined the under-stage singers for the performance of Oliver (even though I still can’t sing). He was very proud of the drum majorettes In the short time attending RM a trip to Gorsefield and skiing trip to Italy were also fitted in.
Following a lead from Messenger, has given me the opportunity to look back at a brief period in my life.
