Hi,
Would this be the spital shop in old montauge St e1
I’m grateful to Terry for identifying Old Montague Street.
Tony Hall’s atmospheric photo of the same shop taken a year or two earlier also included the beginning of the name of the shop next door – CONNORS – and that’s shown in full on another of Tony’s photos, a panorama of a terrace of houses in Old Montague Street, empty and looking ready to be demolished. The Survey of London: Whitechapel web site have identified the address as 136 Old Montague Street, the home of Simon Spital. The shop was in the gap between the present day Don Gratton House building and Block A.
My dad used to talk about his uncle’s sweet shop on old Montague street and I think this must have been it! Does anyone have anymore info about the owners?
