What an amazing man, a real survivor, and a very brave one. I’m ashamed when I hear the prejudice from certain individuals, but applaud anyone who has worked as hard as this man, and many others like him, trying to earn an honest living while dealing with racism from others, and trying to ‘fit in’.

London (and other big cities maybe) seems to have been a real cesspit of racial prejudice. None of that where I was bought up, in Sheffield and then in the Wirral. We had a few Asians at school and they were fine. As for Jews, we wouldn’t know if they were or weren’t, and cared less.

All of us who seem to remember how wonderful the East End used to be, was that taken into account?

You survived the violence and racism and persevered to make a life for yourself and family. This Country was built on immigrants hard work and good will something that never should be forgotten.
I remember Rhodes Boyson as a Tory member of Thatchers government he was a pompous politician wasn’t surprised he was heartless as a headmaster. Ugh!!

Yet another fascinating character. Why don’t I meet people like this? (Or, very probably I do but I don’t have the gift of winkling out stories.)
Carry on….

What a story, such energy and perseverance! I admire your vision: “it’s what you can give and make that counts.”

I believe Marks&Spencer started in Kirkgate market in Leeds not Old Montague Street
