I am the same age as David and my uncle was also a resident caretaker .that was at st pails school, in wellclose square, which had been built on the site of the church built as Danish church and taken over by the C.o.E. that was in father joes time.

There were Maltese cafe/brothels on the corners of Wellclose square where the alleyways came in – as kids we weren’t supposed to know that about the. The atmosphere was very Dickensian. And it had formerly been a wealthy square, housing the scandanavian timber import proprietors.

What fantastic memories. My ancestor, Elena Crudgington, also known as Nellie Estelle, also known as Elena Estelle, performed there twice. I have visited many times to watch performances. I am so pleased that it survived. The Methodists did well to preserve it.

Wiltons is so beautiful as it is: deeply atmospheric, peeling plaster and all. I was there two nights ago for the one-man play about the Nazi-hunter Simon Wiesenthal so loved reading this. David is evidently an excellent caretaker of the building, which no doubt does need a lot of maintenance – but I hope he doesn’t repaint it.

A very interesting post about a very interesting place! I am so pleased it has come back to life as a very atmospheric venue, and I hope it retains its unique peeling paint appeal going forward.

For anyone who would like to experience a genuine Music Hall the Players Theatre Company are holding a special gala night at Wilton’s on Wednesday 21st October at 7pm to celebrate their 90 years of performing Old Time Musical Hall. It should be a lot of fun!
