What strong and brave women these all were. I feel truly humbled by their stories.
My mother also had a manual sewing machine, albeit a Singer, and made most of our clothes. She taught me to do the same, and throughout my teenage years in the early 60s where what you wore was so important, I was always smartly dressed and ‘in vogue’.

A charming and heartfelt memoir. It reminded me of a story I read recently – The Sewing Machine by Natalie Fergie – in which the legacy of a similar machine stretches across the generations.

I am curious to know how the machine was acquired in the first place – it would not have been cheap. Hire purchase, perhaps?
