I remember singing “Have you seen the Muffin man, the Muffin man”, etc. etc. but also remember seeing the Knife Grinder on the corner of where we lived, with neighbours taking their knives down to him to be sharpened. Another memory is a man sitting on the curb, and mending someone’s shoes in one of the roads that took me to and from school. My dad always hammered Segs into the heels of our shoes, to stop them wearing down.

My favourite street trader was the hot chestnut man who used to stand with his brazier opposite Whitechapel station.
