What a wonderful array of fans, for the History of Costume readers. For my valentine this year, I created a card that celebrated “Flirting with Fans” including a vintage guide to the artform. “Twirling in left hand: I wish to get rid of you”. “Twirling in right hand: I love another.”
“Fan wide open: Wait for me.” “Fan shut tight: You have changed.”

And many, many more. Each gesture, a drama-in-the-making.
