Thank you for this lovely article. I worked for A Team Arts all over Tower Hamlets from 1982 into the late 1990s and often visited Rogg’s when I was working nearby, especially in the earlier years. I remember that there was another Rogg, a twin or a brother, who worked with him. There was a feature about them in one of the Sunday supplements many years ago. There was also a Jewish baker nearby in the middle of one of the housing estates where you could buy wonderful bagels with smoked salmon, somewhere off Bgland St? I also remember Blooms!

Oh my! Among of my warmest and fondest memories of my years working in Spitalfields Market and living across the road in Rampart Street are my visits to Roggs. A regular treat was a huge bagel and cream cheese on a day off, or even dreamy cheesecake, borne home carefully wrapped in greasproof paper. This shooping wasn't an errand but an experience in a culinary Aladdin's Cave of a place. Pickles swam in big barrels beneath the counter and Barry advised me that if I ate them everyday I would never get cancer. I was especially fond of a big silver tabby cat that stood guard over the rollmops. I shall seek out the recording mentioned. I count myself lucky to have enjoyed this 'end of an era' establishment and had the pleasure and entertainment of meeting Barry.

I've been subscribed to the Gentle Author for over 27 years now. ..My Father Marc Levy lived in Artillery Lane, so this particular issue interests me - I can imagine my Dad living in this atmosphere..it is fascinating. With the help of my nieces and my brother, we found our grandparents resting place - and that was our aim. - it took 15 years to find!Thank you for a wonderful subscription.
