The foundation garment shop reminds me of my gran and mum’s generation, even when my gran was in her 80s she had old fashioned boned, lace up corsets and if my mum was going to something special like a wedding she’d have an all in one on under her outfit to hold everything in. I’m glad we don’t have to bother with that now as it was so restrictive!

This is a key statement, but it would have needed to be recognised as such more widely for it to have affected social developments at the time. I am afraid that Gillian’s perception, fitting hindsight as it does, was not as widely appreciated at the time as it deserved to be.

Born 1933 and raised in Stoke Newington, my parents were themselves raised in Stepney and Whitechapel and formed part of the Jewish northbound diaspora after 1918. This whole article speaks to me very closely and very loudly; it describes the world of my grandparents, the world from which my parents came and to which we returned when visiting our kin. It must be said that in the narrow span of my family’s awareness, the disaster that planning was wrecking on the old east end was not seen in the light that shines on it today. The attractions of reconstruction after having survived the horrors of the blitz shone too brightly for ordinary people not to be seduced. Alas! is all that one can say.
