When I was age 11 our family moved from Chelsea to Mitcham in Surrey due to my father’s new job, and one of the first things that I can remember about Mitcham was that Pain’s Fireworks were based there. When still in London during the 1950s, one of my brothers had a banger shoot us the leg of his baggy shorts in the 1950s, badly burning him. After that, none of us were allowed out on Guy Fawkes night.

There is something about the colours and graphics of
fireworks that is distinctive and hasn’t changed much over decades – very evocative of post war London with the smell of gunpowder in the foggy air the next morning .

My goodness! So many recognisable fireworks from childhood!
And I remember the jingle “Light up the sky with Standard fireworks”.
What an extraordinary collection. Love it.
