I used to live in Surrey Quays, and one of my favourite escapes was the Wapping shoreline and the pubs that strecth either side. The Gnetel Author perfectly captures that sense of dange the river holds and the sesne that this place is at the edge of things..no wonder so many books have been written that allude to the mystery of the Thames..

Reading the blog post prompted happy memories of finding a small set of watermen's stairs by the Upper Mall in Hammersmith near William Morris's house. Not on Roque's map (doesn't quite cover this area) but perhaps on other maps of the 17th or 18th centuries.
