Saveloy Stall. That one. John Claridge has lured me into the photo, and I tuck my head scarf into my collar and work the top button. Cotton gloves are not much good, and besides one of them has a hole. Darn. Billows of steam cloud my eyeglasses. How I wish I was inside on such a day. Everyone bustles past, eyes downcast, on their way to somewhere warm. I suppose. Street, full of debris. The whole block is boarded up. I shuffle my feet to keep them warm, but it doesn't do much good. The dampness comes up my sleeves, my hem, down my back.

John Claridge's photographs do something very simple: they bring people and their places together. Whereby the one is as important as the other. The pictures reflect this connection in an unmistakable way. The people are usually the first to disappear — but the buildings don't last forever either. Only the photographs remain.

Perhaps , the only wrinkle , was remembering Walt Disney . I had heard , true or not , he was very selective in employment , with regards to race .
