"Danny" as he liked to be called, even by students, was teaching on my foundation course at John Cass in the early 80s. He once kindly gave me a small complimentary set of alkyd paints to try. His gentle manner belied a shrewd artist and draughtsman . If I recall correctly, he mentioned having known Lowry, who he described as "far from naïve".

Thanks to Spitalfields Life, I discovered this artist -- and I so admire his unique distinctive style.
Today, I especially enjoyed looking at the very accomplished sketchbook pages -- they have their OWN vibrant spirit and lavish detail. The sketch of the fruit seller! -- I love how the figure is tucked into the architecture.........We have to search for him. The temporary stacked boxes of
produce are echoed in the building details --- as if everything could topple. It all looks momentary, and yet one gets the feeling that this merchant has been doing this forever. The push/pull of these images is masterful.
