Jackie Brafman was a master showman. It was sales theatre. My Mum and her sisters used to buy from him. He would keep the women waiting for the size and dress they wanted just to keep the stall busy. He was such a well known personality and nothing like that exists now!

That is such a lovely story. My mum was also very happy at Nightingale House.
Gentle Author – you should go over there as there will be lots of folk with interesting stories.

One small anecdote is they had a superb communal pet parrot called Brubeck, to welcome visitors at the entrance. He was particularly partial to mandarin oranges. One of the residents used to take it round the grounds perched happily on her zimmer frame.

A lovely story of this man’s working life

In a Kid for two farthings (1952) Jackie Brafman as Yiddisher Dior can be seen and heard selling dresses to a good humoured packed street. The film shows the Petticoat Lane /Fashion Street area just after the war so worth watching despite the whimsical plot.

It is fascinating to read about George Dickinson who was so much part of those vibeant times. Thank you.
