Another fascinating piece of social history. My late sister-in-law came from Canning Town and was a wonderful seamstress, a trained Tailoress working in the City. She wasn't a blatant social climber but was totally ashamed of where she came from. I always thought that rather sad. An only child of hardworking parents who loved their garden, which thrived under their care. I have a lovely picture of both her's and my parents in the garden on the day of my brother's wedding day. Sadly the old house and road even has long gone, and now appears to be a dual-carriageway with blocks of flats along that stretch. She met my brother when he was temporarily working at the Docks, having finally come home from doing his extended National Service as he'd signed on a Regular 'cos they got paid more. He used to come home and tell us about these huge spiders that used to arrive at the Docks along with the Bananas!

Thanks for introducing us to this fine gentleman. He's a born story-teller, and has a love of
detail. Through his comments, I felt like I toured the marketplace at its absolute zenith and got acquainted with the most vivid characters, vendors, street performers, shoppers, and more.
Oh, how I would love to see the tossing of the china cups and saucers! (and know the secret of how it was done..........!)

A wonderful memoir!

A great story from the post-war period that shows how difficult it all was in the East End. But at least the economy kept going uphill! — And if you look at this quarter on Google Street View today, you can still feel it...

Absolutely wonderful story. And he's right about the meaning of community too. No wonder so many people are at such a loss these days. No community, no ties, no sense of neighbourliness. Such a shame.
