Well, what a fascinating look into the life of Vera and her church. I live in South Australia and have been aware St Dunstan’s for many decades. It was the church where my great-great-grandfather, John Horner married Elizabeth Barrett (often written as Borrett). They clearly had plans for their lives because in just a few short weeks they were on board the Canton heading for Port Adelaide. And thanks again for the story of Vera. It just shows what a game of badminton can lead to.

A lovely life story. I am reminded of the novels of Barbara Pym and Muriel Spark's 'A Far Cry from Kensington' - without the irony of course. If my maths are correct - and they may not be! - Vera must be 90 now being 17 and 3/4s in 1953, she must have been born in 1935 or 1936. Reading this portrait, I felt I was meeting a rather special person.

After reading this, I checked out St Dunstan and All Saints web site where I found this piece of scripture, which is both beautiful and comforting and reminded me of what the people of the East End experienced during the war. It made me think of their strength of spirit and their resilience. No wonder Vera went to join them when she came of age.

'When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through the fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you.’

Isaiah 43: 1-2
