I find those by OTTO PANKOK (1893-1966), for example, very significant.

These works here by WILLIAM NICOLSON I have probably never seen so far. Fantastic, 127 years ago someone was already trying to anticipate the technique of the coming age with the existing woodcut technique: that of colour photography!

phantom characters. Stunning balance between dark and light is skillfully explored here.
A masterful hand at work — although these are woodblock prints, the line is so fluid. And I loved learning about the use of the raw side of the printing block. New info to me. I have a couple colleagues who are expert carvers, and they made me aware of the term “cutting trail” — those glorious marks that reveal the “marks between” left by the knife or blade. I love spotting those, and they seem to affirm the hand of the artist at work.

Impressive and wildly evocative. Each character steps out from the page, and tells their story.
