I wish I still had the glass baubles from childhood when I see these. Until 2001 I had amassed a collection of my own over 15 years, but my house was flooded and I had to throw them out due to damage. I’m now collecting hand made ones from Basel as souvenirs to take home when I retire from Switzerland.

I was interested to learn that you hang a demon on the bottom of your tree - so do I …… a tradition handed down from my parents and theirs, but I didn't know why and I hadn't heard of anyone else having one until I read your blog. Mine must be from the 30s - is made from ‘pipe cleaners but with a plastic face. It’s lost one and a half limbs over the years but I still hang it every year, carrying on the tradition.

Thank you for this nostalgic array of ornaments. Your photos capture the fragility and well-loved sentimentality of these treasures. As I examined each of these, I recalled ornaments from childhood; and the discouraging sound of a glass ball breaking. Setting off a collective "awwww, darn!" from everyone in the household. Our dog Tippy would unintentionally do some damage, wagging her lavish tail in our miniscule living room. Dad purposely bargained for already-inexpensive trees "without a back"; other wise a fulsome tree would have eclipsed the room. I can only imagine the hard negotiating that took place. (the vendor probably thinking: "take it
away! -- Who else would ever want that tree?) But with the ornaments in place, the strands of colored lights, and the requisite silver tinsel (as the final touch) our tree looked glorious.

Thank you for sharing these handheld wonders with us.

Happy Holidays!
