A moving but inspiring story of endurance too. I recall a young school friend in my junior school who smelled really badly. I knew she came from a 'poor' family, but many classmates wouldn't go near her which made me sad for her. I think that's when I learned empathy, although didn't actually know the word back then.

"I had never known such times." This stirring conclusion brought a lump to my throat. I could easily imagine the mother and son, indulging in the rare treat of "abundance". Up until then, they must have felt like outsiders, looking IN at those with money, food, security, etc. I envision the pair sitting together, eagerly enjoying their hard-earned meal. All the while, knowing the stark back story, the day-to-day grind, the lean moments............THAT meal must have seemed like quite a feast.

Thank you for taking us there.

My grandparents all grew up at the same time, tough times, really tough. Those times are coming back.
