Thank you, gentle author, for this lovely piece. I have the pleasure of rehearsing in St Olave’s every week with the Hanover Choir, and it’s a delight to sing in such an extraordinary building. If anyone reading this feels inspired to visit the church to hear some 16th-century polyphony (and sing some carols!), our Christmas concert is at St Olave’s on Saturday December 7th at 7pm. St Olave’s was always an oasis of clam amidst the maelstrom of City life for the 35 years I spent working there. Whilst the world flew past outside, the ability to sit quietly within the confines of the ancient building cogitating, was always welcomed.

Curiously, the immediately preceding item in my list of web pages to visit daily was “Bernini’s Baldacchino shines again at St. Peter’s”.The contrast in styles of religious decoration could not be more extreme: reticence in the Anglican versus preposterous over-egging in the Roman.
