It’s an overcast autumn morning here is Switzerland, so I am grateful for reading this lovely memoir.

My husband ran a factory in West London for 10 years where the workforce were mainly Sikh. He left 20 years ago when we were moving away, but he has always missed his Sikh colleagues. We had some lovely times as we were invited to things like weddings and we grew to admire the generosity of Sikh culture. One of my husband’s colleagues gave him a small book about the history of Sikhism which was fascinating.

We’ve now been in Switzerland getting on for 10 years, the 2 best Indian restaurants in our city are owned and run by Sikh families and the food is excellent.

I love that picture of Suresh and his Mum, where you can see that little boy has the characteristics that Suresh has today, especially those sparkly eyes. Beautiful moving tribute to his mum and family.

An interesting and moving insight, and grateful for the interpretation of the name Singh and Kaur too, as I was always amazed and perhaps even puzzled why so many people were called Singh in the telephone directories we used to have years ago, often several pages of them. Thank you Gentle Author.

I love the way Suresh writes in a way that makes us feel that he is speaking to us personally. I am around the same age and remember my own life happening in parallel with his growing up in Stepney , and relate to the poor housing conditions that he experienced , but having a wonderful family life. I went to Club Row and the surrounding area every Sunday morning with my dad and older sister , so I remember the area where Suresh grew up . Thank you for bringing your memories to life for us to share.
