The Ridgeway is a liberating and stimulating walk. I walked its length from west to east back in 2018 over a number of weeks. During the first stage near Avebury we came upon a couple of guys carrying out a geophysical survey for a university. After a brief chat and they were kind enough to show me some of the results of their investigations under a huge ploughed field. I was utterly amazed to discover that beneath the surface the whole area was virtually covered in red squares indicating human activity. This ancient trackway has been a route for hundreds of years and I would recommend anyone fit enough to walk its length, in part or completely, thanks GE for another great post.

Thank you Gentle Author. This triggered some lovely memory for me, not only from when my father was alive and would always stop at a place of interest on our way to see Grandparents in Gloucestershire, but in later years when I became a Friend of the Ridgeway, and would walk one stretch of it every Sunday, making many friends from fellow walkers with me. I always had a good hour's drive from my then home in Berkshire to get to the next starting point, but the circular walk was a good antidote to a demanding job where the clean air could blow away the cobwebs.
