The way you describe him, towering in black leather with that mix of engine oil and medieval wizard energy, makes him larger than life. What’s striking is the contrast: his intimidating exterior and booming presence balanced by warmth and friendliness once you actually sit down with him.

Ah, now you see I know rather a lot of the Crudgington clan as I am a descendant. There is indeed a small place called Crudgington, but it was swallowed up when the new town of Telford was developed. Crudgington is the site of the Muller dairy.
My Crudgington branch lived in Newton farmhouse, near Worfield, Shropshire. Four brothers came to London in the 1700s, and there they settled. Shoe and bootmakers by trade, let's just say some "branched out" into other careers. I have written about my great, great, great grandfather, Daniel Crudgington, in my blog.
Crudgie and I may even be distantly related!

Beautiful writing about an interesting man.

More than any other place on the internet that I can think of, Spitalfields Life opens windows into places and other people's lives that otherwise I would know nothing about.
Thank you.

Thank you for a fascinating article. My partner used to be a better a motor bike courier in London, so loved the tale too. You write with such a lovely touch, warmth with an eye for humour. I do have one note of concern, Crudgie might want to get the mole on his nose checked, just to make sure. It's a classic home for skin cancer.
Many thanks and best wishes Jacqueline
