Such an important historical archive, which helps redress the balance and puts working class people, especially working class women, and the East End at the centre of social and political change.

These days, so many people have become disillusioned by politics - and politicians - but it is so important that everyone uses their vote. I hope people don't away throw their hard earned right to do so. In the UK, we have a very important election coming up.

Remember Sylvia Pankhurst and her East End allies, who sacrificed so much for the cause of 'Votes For Women.'

Brilliant timing! I am currently working on a series of collages based on Suffragettes. As you mentioned above, my depth of knowledge on this subject was sketchy at first. My research has lead me to so many remarkable life stories. My goal is to tell the stories of little-known figures in the Movement, as well as the name brands. It's bottomless!

It often seems that "all roads lead" to Suffragettes. I read a book about The Wright Brothers, and became enthralled with their younger sister, Katharine. As the Brothers toiled
(and innovated) she was sent to Europe to be their factotum. Europe's interest in aviation was
way ahead of America's, and Ms. Wright ingratiated herself with the Whos Who, appearing at all-male aviation enclaves and conferences, establishing herself as the toast of the Continent, etc. Later in life, she turned her considerable influence to good causes including Votes For Women. Oh wow -- that Katharine!

My collage exhibit will be in the Fall, and am so grateful for today's post and the additional
insights. Thank you, GA. You're a mind reader.

Thank you GA, Vicky Stewart and Adam Tuck for today's blog. I think most people think that Suffragettes just marched with banners and threw bricks at windows. This is far from the truth. In 1914 Emmeline Pankhurst published a book 'Suffragette. My own story. The origins of the Suffragette.' I read the book five years ago after it was published by Hesperus Press in 2016. The Suffragette Movement went on for decades and the treatment some of the women suffered, mostly at the hands of men, was horrendous. I would like to see every 16 year old student read the book at school so that they are aware just what these women went through to win the vote for all women.
