A lovely piece that reminds me of my childhood, my father took me to the top of the Monument when I was about five years old and I still recall the thrill. The City was covered in grime and soot in those days (mid 1950s) and there were a lot of bomb sites but the views were still exciting. I've been up to the top a few times since but now you feel a bit hemmed in with all the tall buildings surrounding it although you can still see Tower Bridge. Somewhere, stored safely, is my father's 8mm cine camera footage of that particular day.

I have to confess that I am not very good at height but have appreciated the monument from ground level. My mum worked in Barclays clearing bank in King William Street when we lived in the City so it's somewhere I have visited a great deal.

As a small child I remember being held out over the side of one of the London docks by a relative - I can't remember who. Understandable, I was terrified. I think that might have been the start of my dislike of heights.

Oh! I walked past the Monument last month, and didn't even realise that you could enter it. There was a street food fair around it on that day, and since I wasn't in the mood for funnel cakes I didn't explore. I have to say, though, that a few years ago I climbed to the top of the Bunker Hill Monument in Charlestown MA, pursued by a pack of adolescents, and I don't have fond memories of the following two days when it hurt to move (or sit, or crouch...)

Sadly, I may have missed my window for climbing the Monument! At least I have your photos.

I spent 5 years working in a building called Monument House right beside it and am ashamed to say I never climbed it as I don’t like the feeling of winding staircases in an enclosed space (I never made it to the very top of the Leaning Tower of Pisa as I felt sick by the colonnade point!)

My last visit to London was in 2013, we walked along Monument Street and my old offices at Monument House had been converted to luxury flats.

I have read that the Monument was used as an astrophysical instrument in its early days. Perhaps, this ought to be explained to visitors to the Monument.
