This is so cool! Raju Vaidyanathan's collection of forty thousand Spitalfields negatives is mind-blowing. The idea that he's only now printing them, rediscovering photos he took thirty years ago, is absolutely fascinating. What an amazing personal historical archive to uncover!

Hi Raju
Just heard your interview on the BBC radio London with Robert Elms, Sunday 9th June. I also have a deep connection with the Brick Lane area 1980s, and I have also contributed photos towards the Four Corners Exhibition! Hope to see you there.
Best wishes

Great photos. I was a mature undergraduate at Queen Mary College, Mile End, 30 years ago and on a Friday finished lectures and tutorials before 4 o’clock. Some of us used to go to Brick Lane for a curry, I liked the vibrant atmosphere as much as the food. Afterwards I’d buy beigels for the weekend before heading home which back then was out at Upminster. I was in my early 30s back then. Happy memories!

What a wonderful piece of social history. I never stayed on at school or did further education at college, but in my early 30s after being seriously ill and having to give up work temporarily after major surgery, I signed up with the Open University and did a Degree. My foundation course included a case study of Brick Lane, so learnt some fascinating things about it and its evolving history during that time, and got to go on a group visit with our tutor counsellor. I sadly didn't have a camera to record my visit back then, but have always want to revisit the area (including Columbia Flower Market which is still on my wish list). I did achieve a BA(Hons) after 6 hard years of studying, so a huge confidence boost too.
