Raju’s archive of forty thousand negatives feels like the opposite of throwaway documentation—each frame from the 1980s captures a Brick Lane most people today never saw, from the Halal Meat Man to the Joi Bangla Krew. What strikes me is how he only just printed these photos after decades, discovering them freshly three decades later. That gap between capturing and seeing makes the whole collection feel like archaeology. Hearing that Raju's father arrived in 1949 and immediately ended up living on Brick Lane gave me chills! Also, finding a forgotten stash of forty thousand negatives after thirty years is just mind-blowing. I really cannot wait to see Julie Begum's lecture next week!

Raju is a legend. I find Raju as like Saul Leiter, who remains anonymous. It is high time that Raju should publish his Photography Book.

This is so cool! Raju Vaidyanathan’s collection of forty thousand Spitalfields negatives is mind-blowing. The idea that he’s only now printing them, rediscovering photos he took thirty years ago, is absolutely fascinating. What an amazing personal historical archive to uncover!

Great photos. I was a mature undergraduate at Queen Mary College, Mile End, 30 years ago and on a Friday finished lectures and tutorials before 4 o’clock. Some of us used to go to Brick Lane for a curry, I liked the vibrant atmosphere as much as the food. Afterwards I’d buy beigels for the weekend before heading home which back then was out at Upminster. I was in my early 30s back then. Happy memories!
