But you can’t collect Wikipedia items in the way you could those cards. Is there anything to beat the joys of collecting and the triumph of finding just the one you were looking for to add to or complete a particular set? These Celebrated Gateways are lovely and look they were a set of 50. I wonder if there were pictures of gates in places other than London. It doesn’t really do to consider the excess cases of lung cancer serious collecting might have involved!

I also love the huge gate in the district of Spalen (Spalentor). Basel is full of historic treasures like this, it’s worth a visit.

It seems that the 1770s were rather like the 1970s when town planners thought it a good idea to knock down historic buildings in the name of progress. Fortunately, we have one gate, remarkably similar to many of these structures, here in Worcester, called the Edgar Tower. We also have Water Gate on the banks of the Severn which is similar in style to Traitors’ Gate. There is also a City walk around the sites of all of the other gates that have been demolished. It is a pity that London only now has the place names to remember them by. However, the London Wall Walk is one on my list for this year.
