Personal recollections are so important - and this one is a gem. I will forward this to my husband. He has gotten the bug for writing his recollections of his days in the service (US Navy) as well as a diary of his 3 trips to Africa, as a hospice nurse. And the enjoyment of that lead to him to try short fiction, etc. A wonderful way to decompress from a stressful job. I have a good friend from high school days, who is spending his retirement writing a narrative about his experiences in Viet Nam.
The process is helping him to decode those harrowing years, and his dedication to this project is inspiring. I love asking him, "How's the writing?......" and then hearing his revelations.

"I write entirely to find out what I'm thinking, what I'm looking at, what I see and what it means;
what I want and what I fear." ---- Joan Didion
