Coming from the very windy east coast of Scotland, a very sturdy umbrella is required. The telescopic type are just blown inside out and they snap. I have passed numerous bins on the street in my time, all with a broken flimsy umbrella in them.

What a treat! A "real" umbrella is a wonderful thing. And so veddy British. I'm so glad to know that the future of this essential accessory is in such good hands.

During a downpour, Manhattan is full of the most slap-dash marginal umbrellas. Normally, they are the pathetic collapsible variety --- Mr. Ince would be horrified!? -- and one stiff breeze usually sends them sailing down Fifth Avenue, as pedestrians try to duck and sidestep them. But as your post mentioned, the handsome doormen at the St. Regis (oh, those uniforms!) yield their huge sturdy umbrellas with aplomb. I have been known to duck in one revolving doorway, and emerge from another, just to have one of those tall gents offer the protection of his umbrella.
Doormen! -- One of the great joys of the City. And umbrellas.

So good to know that Richard is keeping this amazing East End family business going after so many years in the area making those lovely umbrellas.
I didn't realise they were in Vyner Street where my late brother John had a little artist studio.
Long may they continue ....as this summer in the UK is proof that we still need a good umbrella!
